A few years ago, I was at a market in Amstelveen. The market was about giving old toys a new life in different ways. There was a woman which made jewellery of old toys and old materials. She made necklaces and dresses of lips of drink bottles, and the result was very inspiring. Next to it, she made also necklaces of old marbles.
At the internet, you can find a lot of information about how to make jewellery of old toys and materials. Making necklaces of old spoons, making brooches out of old keys. You call it, and you can find it! Recycling old toys and materials is popular. In a world that needs every person to reduce, reuse and recycle, coming up with ways to reuse your old junk in a funky, fun way is beneficial to the planet.
At the workshop night of Your Biggest Bang there were several stands and workshops of people with the theme: ethical, up cycling etc. Stefan Lehner was one of the artists which has a workshop stand at the party of Your Biggest BANG. Stefan develops furniture, objects and interiors on the base of used materials. It is essential to reuse former or hidden functions of the recycled materials. The transformations are made with complex materials (industry) but also with cheep trash (packaging). The metamorphose should be surprising, make smile, be comfortable and useful. The website of Stefan Lehner is very inspiring. He won a lot of prices for innovative work.
More and more, it’s important to make students aware of sustainability. People want to make students aware of design in a sustainable way. At the design academy Eindhoven there are several lectures about developing sustainable products. The results of these lectures were amazing. Examples are windylight: street-lighting which Works with wind energy, paratotal: little satchels made of starch. Very innovative ideas with a future-feeling. Also at the AMFI – Amsterdam Fashion Institute, the students are more and more aware of the sustainable world. Every year a part of the study is about the sustainable world. The optional block ‘Mundial’ makes people aware of fashion in a sustainable way. Very innovative designs are the result. Outfits made of old drink bottles, organic cotton and old garbage.
A few months ago, I started to upcycle my own things. I made necklaces out of old fabrics and marbles. I had a lot of old fabrics and I wanted to do something with it. Inspired by the woman of the market, which made necklaces out of old marbles, I gave it a twist and made something new. My old toys had a new life. At the workshop night of Your Biggest BANG, I also gave a workshop about these new jewellery’s. It was very successfully, because who does not have old marbles at home?
Sustainability becomes more and more important. And because a lot of people requires the old times, with making things on their own and being creative, people start making things on their own. Inspire yourself by the artist Stefan Lehner, or follow a lecture at the design academy. Upcycling your old objects is getting popular (and it is popular already), and it is very cheap as well!
